Remember the other day when we spotted President-elect Barack Obama prepping for a little beach reading? (Okay... so, maybe you remember it as the day we spotted President-elect Barack Obama sans shirt.)
Well, we figured out what he's been reading. Chris Crowley and Henry S. Lodge's Younger Next Year: Live Strong, Fit, and Sexy--Until You're 80 and Beyond !
Oh, and here we thought Barack was the one who wrote the book on that subject...

This is a bit surprising. One would expect Obama's vacation reading to be a little more highbrow. Or at least something relevant to his new job, like the Goodwin book about Lincoln's cabinet, or that Roosevelt biography. But instead, the president-elect is reading some tacky self-help fitness book?
Well "g." it is a vacation. With all of the things going on in the world and the job he about to tackle, I applaud him for taking a mental break to read something that is going to help his physical body. Being president can age you look at pictures of Bush when he first got in office compared to now. Really, look at all of the recent presidents before office photos compared to after leaving office. Obama is just trying to get a physical head start.
Gratifying but not all that surprising. Younger Next Year is a deadly serious guide to a radically better life. And the audience tends to be very bright and very thoughtful men and women. Not unlike President-elect Obama, come to think of it. And he truly gets the key point: that a serious commitment to daily exercise is not a luxury but is the key to an effective life. No joke. Way to go Chris! President elect Obama should use Chris & Harry's ideas to formulate a National Health care policy. I just finished my first half marathon on the Concept2 rower 21097 meters in 1 hr 30 min 52.7 sec. (Puff, Puff, Puff)
Happy New Year,

Great that Obama is reading your excellent book, but I reckon he's going to be grayer next year, however fit he is. I do love the fact that Obama exercises so regularly. It really gives pause to those "incredibly busy" people who "just don't have time to eat right or exercise".
"Younger Next Year" is NOT a tacky self-help book, though I don't like the title much.
I just read an older version of Younger Next Year and Younger Next Year for Women and they have inspired me to get in shape again. I've never read any other books that explain so clearly and vividly (and memorably) what happens to your body on a cellular level if you don't exercise for the rest of your life. I'm a sedentary bookish-type and these books got me out of the zero gravity chair (my idea of nirvana) and out walking every day for the past two weeks (so far)! I want to buy a copy for everyone I know! I'm the same age as Obama, but I certainly don't look like he does! He knows what he's doing if he's reading Younger Next Year!
I agree. I think it's great that the President is taking an active interest in his health. I agree, too, that the presidency ages people fast, and every little bit to slow that process down is going to help. The person who refered to the book as a "tacky self-help book" obviously hasn't read it and is just making excuses for not doing something to improve his/her own health. Obama already knows more about American Government than the average American. Let him read his book! Besides, when is an interest in physical fitness "tacky?"
