You know I can't help but find this funny. On one hand we have people glad to have a fresh face and new ideas in the White House. Finally we have a US president(elect) who is an excellent example to the rest of the nation that a healthy, fit lifestyle is possible to whoever really pursues it. I totally admire and respect Barack Obama's commitment to his personal health & fitness. I read that even during his campaign and currently in spite of the quotidien exigencies of his transition, Barack still keeps his DAILY regimen of working out. That's impressive, given that a man in his position is no doubt a very busy person. When he run for President he threw his private life out of the window. He should have thought of his children. It is the job of the photographers to take pictures why should they spare the President elect? Remember Princess Di and her chidren? Why should be different with Obama and his children?

I am delighted that they were able to take a very needed vacation and to pay respect to his grandmother. I am not surprised by many of the comments regarding his children and family. I do, however, agree that the pics of the children, especially in their bathing suits, should be removed immediately. Second, it is concerning to see the Paparazzi have the ability to get so close to the first family, especially in their private location. Third, I would also like to know what book he is reading. Fourth, Michelle is a very beautiful, intelligent and strong woman and mother and I have the utmost respect for her. Last, as a single parent and a student (masters in education) I am excited about President Obama's plans for changing the NCLB law and increasing teachers pay.

Hi I hope the world will understand that Mr Obama is the right man for the job (President, Father and Husband)he is not perfect nor will he fix all the problems but he is honest and this is something US politics need A CHANGE IT'S BEEN A LONG TIME COMING. Just allow him and his family to to rest before the storm begins on Jan 20th 09. What every American needs to do ( black, white, hispanic, jews, man, woman or any other) is to give him the support so that he can guid the country and make the change he has promise. Greetings from Australia, fellow World citizens. Yes, I must admit I followed a link to see Mr. Barack with his shirt off - & it was a very good look too. As was Ms. Michelle, & the kids look like happy kids having a good Xmas holiday - well-deserved. In fact, it looks like a fairly normal family break. I don't see what the problem is with kids running around in bikinis on a beach holiday.
A holiday obviously tinged with sadness due to Barack's grandmother dying just before the election day. What bittersweet irony. But apparently Mrs. Dunham had already registered her vote before she went to Heaven.
Unfortunately, the Obamas are now in the public domain, & they will have to negotiate their privacy with the press, as do so many others. I think the ghost of Princess Diana is always in the background on that one. However, I dare say the Obamas will work that one out with their usual intelligence and caution as they go.
Quite a number of us over here in Australia are totally overjoyed that George W. Shrub is packing up & leaving Washington. (We don't have to listen to those unintelligible sound grabs for much longer). Do you know that George Bush did not have a passport until he became President? Our former national leader (whose Liberal party lost last year's election), John Howard (whom we had to endure for 12 years) became one of George W's Best Friends, & Bush convinced Howard to also send troops to Iraq, which must be one of the most ill-conceived wars in history. Our Australian troops are still over there, getting shot & blown up to the bejesus too. I've always wondered - if it was just a matter of getting rid of Saddam Hussein & his psychotic sons, why not a couple of assassins? One word: oil. Second word: money.
So, because our former Australian leader decided to follow George W. Shrub, we too became targets from right-wing Islamists, which has resulted in carnage such as the Bali bombings.
Our new leader, Kevin Rudd & his Labor party were elected just over a year ago, ending the 12-year deadlock of the former party (very akin to your current American experience of Democrats unseating the incumbent Republicans), & sure, they've made mistakes, they may not have gone as far as we wanted them too, but they've done some great stuff, & at least there's educated, forward-looking thinking amongst their representatives. There has been a mass sigh of relief not to have a leader who was so out of touch with his populace and with current issues [eg. he was a climate change denyer, he thought Guantanamo was fine etc etc].
OK, with the current Rudd Government, we still have to keep on their backs, & tell them what we want - but that's participatory democracy, isn't it?
I would suggest to those of you above who are agin or undecided about Obama, to read the book he wrote nearly 10 years ago "Dreams From My Father". I read it about 18 months ago. Even if it had not been written by Barack , it's an incredibly good read. It details an incredibly interesting, very multi-cultural childhood & adolescence, & his experiences as a community organiser were an eye-opener to me.
Congratulations America - apart from anything else, you've managed to elect a man who has lived in both white & black worlds, has experienced both racism & privilege, who has travelled and lived in a number of countries, who is not only educated but knows how to think, and speak without an autocue. A man who obviously values his wife and family as his basis, & I think knows he's lucky. He also seems to have some sense of humility, enjoys sport & music & I dare say he & Michelle indulge in a tad of the horizontal tango in the midst of it all. Very normal.
I think it will be a very interesting presidency, & gee I wish I had a ticket to the Inaugural Ball - what a party.
And I must say I had a chuckle about the correspondents above as to whether Hawai'i was part of America. I believe they stopped teaching geography in American schools some years ago, that would account for it. It would probably account for the question I was asked a couple of years ago in Portland, Oregon, as to just WHAT language we speak in Australia. (It's English, by the way).
Anyway, let's look to a new era. Best wishes to all for 2009.
